DIE SONNENFINSTERNIS AM 20.07.1963 IM RÜCKBLICKDie Zentralzone der Sonnenfinsternis vom 20.07.1963 zog sich von Japan über den nördlichen Pazifik nach Alaska und durch das nördliche Kanada (Diagramm von Fred Espenak). Erst am Nachmittag erreichte der Kernschatten des Mondes in Quebec und im US-Bundesstaat Maine dichter besiedelte Gebiete, bevor er die Erde im Atlantik verließ. Seit 1945 hatte es immer wieder Versuche gegeben, totale Sonnenfinsternisse von Flugzeugen aus zu beobachten. Ein Beobachter in der Stratosphäre hat nicht nur die Wolken, sondern auch etwa 2/3 der atmosphärischen Gase unter sich, was bei jeder astronomischen Beobachtunge in unschätzbarer Vorteil ist. Und diesen Vorteil wollten 1963 zahlreiche Beobachtergruppen insbesondere zur Spektrografie nutzen. Niemals vorher oder nachher waren soviele Forschungsflugzeuge im Kernschatten einer SoFi unterwegs wie an jenem 20.07.1963 über dem Norden Kanadas im Bereich des Finsternismaximums [3].
Aus Deutschland war eine gemeinschaftliche Expedition der Universitätsternwarte München, der Firma Dr. Heidenhain und des Bayerischen Fernsehens an den Großen Sklavensee in Kanada gereist [1]. Am 9. November 1963 wurde in der ARD eine 45minütige Dokumentation über dieses Unternehmen gesendet. Dr. Heidenhain bewarb die bei der Expedition erfolgreich eingesetzten Geräte auf der Rückseite des Oktoberheftes 1963 von Sterne und Weltraum [2]. Die Zeitschrift hatte sich ihrerseits bereits 1962, vor allem aber 1963, in mehreren Beiträgen mit der Beobachtung von Sonnenfinsternissen beschäftigt, sowohl allgemein als auch im Hinblick auf die SoFi 1963 [Literatur]. Die Vereinigung der Sternfreunde e.V. (VdS) hatte bereits zu den in Europa sichtbaren Totalen Sonnenfinsternissen 1954 (Schweden - Insel Galtö, 36 Teilnehmer), 1959 (Kanaren) und 1961 (Italien - Florenz) Mitgliederreisen durchgefürt. 1963 nahm man erstmals ein Ziel außerhalb Europas in Angriff, wobei nach der Beobachtung der SoFi in Fort Simpson (Kanada) astronomische und weltraumrechnische Einrichtungen in Kalifornien, Arizona, Florida, Washington und New York besucht wurden. Da die großen Entfernungen zwischen den Zielen bei einer zweiwöchigen Reise nur mit dem Flugzeug zu bewältigen war, ergab sich ein Reisepreis von DM 4900,- (ca. EUR 2500,-). In der damaligen Zeit war dies ein kleiens Vermögen. Um dennoch genügend Mitreisende zu gewinnen, konnten auch Nicht-Mitglieder an der Reise teilnehmen.
